Today is National Cut Your Energy Costs Day.

Here are some tips we created to help you save energy and money in your home:

In this time of economic hardship, it is important that we help each other by finding ways to save money.

One way to save money on energy is by having your home’s external walls insulated. However, as a homeowner you can do even more to conserve and use the energy that you have in the most efficient manner possible!

Here are some ideas to help you stay warm this winter without breaking the bank:

  • Lower your boiler flow rate from 75 degrees to 60 degrees.

  • Turn off or lower the thermostat in rooms that are not being used.

  • Turn off electronic devices rather than leave them on stand-by mode.

  • Fleece your house – check around windows and doors for gaps and cracks, fill in any cracks you find in floor or skirting boards. Line your letterbox to stop mice getting inside, then close off chimneys that are no longer used!

  • You can reduce your water and electricity consumption by running fewer loads of laundry and washing them at 30 degrees.

  • Lower the temperature of your thermostat to 17 degrees and wear a jumper if you feel cold.

  • A smart thermostat can be more efficient than a traditional model by only heating the rooms you are occupying, letting you control it remotely using your phone and preventing cold spots.

  • Avoid using the tumble dryer—it’s better for your clothes to line-dry or use indoor airers.

  • Running a dishwasher only when it is full will reduce the amount of water used and save energy.

  • Replace energy-wasting appliances—ideally with A or higher rated versions to see savings.

  • Switch to LED bulbs, which are more energy-efficient than halogen.

  • Make it a habit to turn off lights when you leave a room.

  • Cook with the lid on to reduce cooking times and save energy.

  • Double glazing windows keep the noise out and reduce your heating bills. Adding clear plastic lining can keep more heat inside your home as well.

  • Installing a smart meter allows you to monitor your usage and track how much energy you are using at any given moment—giving you the opportunity to see if you need to adjust your habits in response.

  • Adding insulation to your walls and attic increases the energy efficiency of your home, which lowers utility bills. This is good for both the environment and wallets!

Contact your council to find out if there are any grant or loan schemes available for energy-saving upgrades.
