Project Background

EWI and ArtBrickTM were used during the two phase operation to breathe new life into the tired properties. ArtBrickTM was used to it’s maximum potential to mirror the varying shades of brickwork, so to stay in keeping with conservation areas. 

The EWI boards used (made of Phenolic and measuring 120mm in width), have been proven to exceed the current standard U-Value .3W/m2. The lower the U-Value, the more efficient the material is as a heat insulator.
Phenolic insulation is manufactured by a process in which a plastic foam forms an insulating core between two flexible tissue faced layers. It has a high closed cell content and fine cell structure, so therefore has very low thermal conductivity compared to rigid polyurethane or extruded polystyrene.

An airey house (founded by Sir Edwin Airey and constructed after the Second World War), is a prefabricated concrete box structure, which is formed from closely spaced storeyheight external wall columns (104mm x 57mm in cross-section and reinforced longitudally with small steel tubes), to which thin concrete cladding panels are fastened with copper wire.

There is an internal spine wall constructed similarily with colums of 75mm x 57mm cross-section. The first floor and roof beams are bolted to the columns. Airey properties have massively outlived their expected lifespan, and are designated by BRE as ‘Defective’.
