Solar PV
& Battery Storage

What the product is

Solar electricity panels, known as photovoltaics (PV) stores the energy from the sun and converts it into electricity you can use in your home.

By installing solar panels, you are generating your own renewable electricity enabling you to receive payments for extra energy you generate but do not use.

A solar panel is constructed by many cells created from layers of a semi-conducting material, typically silicon. When the sun shines on this a flow of electricity is generated.  The stronger the direct sunlight the more electricity is gathered.

A solar PV setup is set up using several panels in which each panel generates 355W of energy in direct sunlight. Having 10 panels generates Direct Current (DC) electricity. An inverter is required to convert the DC electricity to Alternating Current (AC) which typical household appliances require. This electricity can be used throughout your home and any additional generated can be exported back to the power grid in order to make money from not using all of the energy collected.

Unshaded, south facing roofs are ideal for maximum electrical output. East or West facing roofs can still be considered but won’t have the potential for collecting energy. North facing roofs aren’t ideal for solar panels in terms of initial cost outlay to have a significant impact to energy saving techniques.

If you plan to install a Solar PV system within your home, you need to register with the Distribution Network Operator (DNO) who are responsible for bringing electricity into your home. In most cases the installer will register the device for you.

Battery storage creates the opportunity to save excess energy gathered from the solar panels enabling homeowners to pay for cheap electricity at night and using the stored energy during the day. They create an opportunity to provide national grid balancing services and wholesale electricity trading. Battery storage provides a back-up in the event of a power cut.

These devices were made possible thanks to smart meters and energy companies being able to monitor electricity imports and exports allowing for tariffs to be created where home owners can pay different rates for electricity depending on the time of day.
