New houses built here, new houses planned there. There is a lot to be admired and applauded in the Government’s ambitious objectives. But we would also urge that the worthy option of ‘saving houses’ isn’t overlooked in any future housing projects.

Insulating the UK’s eight million solid walled homes has the potential to reduce energy bills by up to 30 per cent. That’s according to new research carried out by Leeds Beckett University, The University of Salford and Loughborough University.

We know from experience that when done well, retrofit can provide plenty of noticeable energy savings and deliver comfortable homes for residents.

In one of the first projects of its kind in the UK, Westdale North Ltd is refurbishing a number of houses in a conservation area at Broxtowe in Nottinghamshire – and the improvements are already noticeable.

Structherm are the UK’s number one experts when it comes to external refurbishment of non-traditional housing and high-rise buildings.

Airey houses come under the non-traditional category and are notoriously difficult to deal with.

Whilst External Wall Insulation (EWI) is known to provide added thermal insulation to reduce heating bills in winter it is lesser known fact that EWI can also improve comfort levels in summer by helping to keep the sun’s heat (solar gain) out of buildings and will also reduce the need for mechanical comfort cooling via air conditioning.

Twenty-seven thousand certified heat pump installations have been registered in the first six months of 2024.

That’s a 45% increase on the same period in 2023.
